Wharenui

Koruru/head  raparapa/hands  tahuha/spine poutokomanawa/heart
 heke/ribs.

A wharenui  represent an important ancestor it’s like a book. On top of the
wharenui is a koruru/head. On the back of the wharenui is some pictures of
people that have passed away that were important.  Head/ koruru is a carved
head. The marae is a carved place. The marae is like a history book. On the
side of the marae are the are the arms. The arms are called raparapa. There
are the hands which are called the raparapa. Inside there is the heart.  The
heart is called poutokomanawa. There are ribs inside the marae. They are
called heke.

The marae is important for the maori  because it’s like a another house for
anyone. They do a powhiri if it’s your first time. You can have birthdays there
and  weddings. Sometimes they have meeting there. In the winter people
that are homeless get to stay a the marae for a couple of nights in Auckland.
